Weight in Air: The Small Correction That Makes a Big Difference in Cut-Gate Weighing

In weighing systems, accuracy is not always lost because the machine is slow or the load cell is weak.

Many times, accuracy is lost in the split second between product release and product impact.

This is especially true in cut-gate weighers handling free-flowing products like sugar, salt, pulses, detergent, sulphur, fertilizers, plastic granules, and similar materials.

At SmartFill, this is exactly where the Nexus Cut-Gate Weigher uses its “weight in air” correction mechanism.

What is SmartFill Nexus?

SmartFill Nexus is our cut-gate weigher platform, available in three variants:

  • 4H3L Nexus Cut-Gate Weigher
  • 4H10L Nexus Cut-Gate Weigher
  • 4H15L Nexus Cut-Gate Weigher

It is designed for fast and accurate weighing of free-flowing products where robustness, speed, and low giveaway matter.

The machine works with two feeding mechanisms:

  1. Gravity Feeder for coarse feeding
  2. Electromagnetic Vibratory Feeder for fine feeding

The gravity feeder is a cuboid funnel with a pneumatic cut-gate at the end. This gate opens and closes depending on how close the weight inside the weighing bucket is to the target weight.

In simple words, the gravity feeder quickly fills most of the required weight, and the vibratory feeder handles the final fine correction.

The Challenge with Free-Flowing Products

Free-flowing products move fast.

When the gravity gate opens, material does not fall slowly. It rushes down at high speed. By the time the weighing bucket load cell detects the target weight, some extra material may have already left the gravity feeder but has not yet reached the bucket.

This material is already “in the air.”

The machine has not measured it yet, but it is already on its way.

So if the gate closes only after the bucket reaches the target weight, the final weight may go beyond the required value. This leads to overfilling, giveaway, and inconsistency.

For products like sugar, salt, detergent, pulses, and sulphur, even a small extra flow can make a noticeable difference over thousands of packs.

What is Weight in Air?

“Weight in air” refers to the weight of the material that has already left the feeder but has not yet landed in the weighing bucket.

It is not visible to the load cell at that exact moment, but it will be added to the final weight within milliseconds.

The SmartFill engineering team developed a correction mechanism that considers this falling material during the final calculation.

Instead of waiting for the bucket to reach the exact target weight, the Nexus system intelligently estimates the material already in motion and closes the gravity gate at the right moment.

This helps the machine reach the final target weight with a much lower giveaway.

How It Helps in Real Production

The benefit is simple.

The machine does not react late.

It understands that some material is still falling and adjusts the cut-gate action accordingly. This mechanism particularly comes very handy when there is variation in bulk density of the products.

This makes Nexus especially useful for fast-flowing products where traditional gate closing logic may lead to overfilling.

The result is:

  • Better weighing accuracy
  • Lower giveaway
  • More consistent packs
  • Better control over high-speed product flow
  • Improved long-term savings for the customer

In real packaging lines, this correction matters because giveaway is not a one-time loss. It repeats pack after pack, shift after shift, month after month.

Built in India, Built for Real Applications

SmartFill is proud to be a Made-in-India brand designing and manufacturing cut-gate weighers in-house.

For many years, Indian packaging machine OEMs and end users had to depend heavily on imported cut-gate weighing systems. Today, Nexus offers a strong Indian alternative with local engineering, faster support, easier communication, and application-level understanding.

And more importantly, the machine is not built only on brochure claims. It is built around real product behavior.

Suitable Applications

SmartFill Nexus is commonly used for:

  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Detergent
  • Pulses
  • Sulphur
  • Fertilizers
  • Seeds
  • Grains
  • Plastic granules
  • Hardware products
  • Other free-flowing materials
